Trick and Treat by EmpressIllyria Trick and Treat by EmpressIllyria
can you say MIXED MEDIA?
Pencils for lines, INK to bold and contrast them out, watercolor pencil to fill out the color scheme, Iphone camera to cap the image, and Paintshop to fix things up a bit... (I will edit this deviation with new stuff rather than post minor tweaks to it when that happens in the future... WIP it... WIP it good!)

WEEEEE...
YAY for toys and art skillz! (still developing alot of that latter part)

So anyway I dont do alot of contests, but I got fascinated by these characters (its probably a sorrority thing, since there are parallels between subject and artist, lol oddly the redhead looks quite alot like my big sister) Anyway, had fun with the idea so I figured Id put it up to make contest deadline (today! Oct 28) and then finnish the tweaks later, there is still tweaking to be done. They need fall leaves, a full moon, and some twisted tree siluettes (I am thinking of weeping cherrys for some reason, or maybe crazy Jacaranda trees) of course alot of fall leaves, in various shades of orange and brown, and some more pumpkins! Can never have enough carved pumpkins!!!!

I LOVE this Halloween thing, even though I have plenty of reason to NOT, just love "Come as you ARENT!" parties with all the dressing up and the kids with the... AH good times. :)

Ah this is for that witchy contest by Kamikazekayti featuring her "psychic siamese twin" witches "Trick and Treat" (I am calling them TnT just cause)

Many Thanks!

It has been a real adventure, I am playing with Opacity settings on both the brushes (in PS) and filters, I just posted an effects filter version of them that I am thinking solves a number of the issues I have with it as it stands... I think I could definitely tweak it more, but I keep running into that whole time thing with my various projects and more pressing priorities! So much fun and a lot of learning happening with it though, I feel I am really begining to acquire a new skill set with this digital stuff. I just wish the original would have digitized as nice as it actually is (the phone camera pixelated it to high hell and broke up the smoothness of the blended colors, the original has a real pastel quality to it that is very soft and pretty, but unfortunately doesnt seem to translate very well across media) *shrugs*

Check out the scrapbook, I am not sure but I think I like the filtered version better

opacity settings are fun, but i found the most helpful thing to do is to adjust the settings on the tablet itself so the pen is pressure sensitive. makes worlds of difference!

Ah DA MOBILE black hole strikes again!
(It has this nasty little habit of SAYING it has posted a message without actually doing it, why it takes the extra time to CONFIRM that the message was sent only to not actually do it, is beyond me but it is sadly not the first time its done that too me (MANY responses I type out and battle my stupid "auto-edit feature" which screws up half of what you type anyway, seem to NOT actually make it to their intended destinations... 3-G my ass!), I am thinking its time to stick to the computer for this stuff!

I rushed to get them up by deadline and everything. Ah well, such is the way of things... I still need to finnish them up though.

The bad thing is I didnt get it until I got your last comment and voting had started and so I restarted the votes, because a DA black hole is no fault of either one of ours! I love them, it looks great!

Oh wow, thanks, I really didnt expect the contest to start over for them though!

Anyway, they have also been updated with some new tweaks, Im still working out that peacock broom so it actually registers against the background and trying to figure out miss black dress's theigh high boot for color scheme... but they have been quite a fun project.

Many thanks again, I really am shocked that the voting got restarted to include them, that is just astonishing to me.

many thanks... Im still experimenting with all this digital stuff. So its been a great learning experience for me, I have thoroughly enjoyed it! great characters btw

Although I had a crazy random thought, since the contest rules said they can shift weight and age, I was thinking what they were missing was the REALLLY unexpected twist of one of them as chubby wrinkly old ladies... like human Sharpei puppies! Sorry, I have a strange sense of humor (as noted by my latest Eyore and fat mermaid -or "Manitermaid" since she is a Manatee hybrid- deviations) you know just to do the COMPLETELY out of left field take on it. :) Espeically grannies trying to be sexy... that would just be really rediculously funny Im thinking. :)

Anyway many thanks for including me, and I am glad you enjoyed them, I had such a great time working with your girls! :)

It's a great thing to think that way if you ask me!

I actually wasn't watching you before now, I don't know why, I love your work! I'll have to go check out the eyore manitemermaid!!

Im a traditonal artist, so for me the digital thing has been a slow going process... I've flirted with it a little here and there, but its really only recently that I've begun to really take an interest in it. Im finding it to be alot like traditional painting in that you sort of have to do everything in layers. Do one for the base, then go over it with some general shape, and then go over it again with details, then highlights and shadows, etc. Its FASTER than painting, but still kind of slow and there is this strange "disconnectedness" I am having to adjust to... Im used to the whole thing being a very intimate experience, its tactile, you touch it, you touch it and MOVE this arround and well, its sort of a dance, digital, even with my fun new toy (Wacom drawing pad) still has this strange sense of distance to it... I dont know, its difficult to explain I think. But Some of the "road tests" I've been doing for getting comfortable with it as well as trying new skills out, has really come together in this one project in a very rewarding way.

Now that the broom is filled out (although could use some refining) Im feeling them being very close to being done (that and my OCD fixation thing has been easing up now that I've got most of what I wanted to accomplish taken shape... so Im getting distracted by other projects again)

I actually did some early designs on the girls from the contest old and wrinkly, and somewhat overweight, trying to be very sex kittenish, I'll be sure to post some results from that soon! :)

I love how responses I post on my Iphone dont seem to actually POST when I pull up the page on a computer.... Hmmm...

I completely agree with you btw, but I have a hard time justifying getting a new scanner when I have a perfectly good one sitting packed up in storage on the other side of the ocean. It annoys me a bit not to have it, but she isnt going to get arround to sending anything for a while (in the middle of a messy divorce, and Im awfully busy with 6 month old twins, so its not my biggest priority lately) so as irritated as I get trying to digitize stuff these days, Im good with it. It is good enough to achieve the goal of getting the ideas OUT of my head... and I can always replace the files with better ones later :)

Duh, I can imagine how busy you can be in this situation - even one child can take up a loads of time, not mentioning the twins (somehow I have a thing for twins and honestly I'd love to had twin babies in the future). I'm sorry to hear about the divorce, I hope you're getting somehow well. And that you'll gaina news scanner, your art really deserve this ^^

Many thanks,

They are updated and further developed once more now...

Still working on the peacock broom and going to blur the background a bit and then develop some of the fallen leaves in the foreground for focal point...

Its fun watching it develop, they are going in some unexpected directions I think, I like being slightly unexpected.

When I was little, and doing gymnastics and acro, they used to have a simple philosophy that they drilled into us, when anyone complained about not being strong enough (say to hold that hand balance for a minute 30+ seconds) they would tell us "GROW STRONGER!", which of course I transposed on just about every aspect of my life. If your skills arent strong enough... DEVELOP THEM until they are!

As I recall, you were more interested in texting someone than in sketching with me on breaks when I was up there remoding... I would've helped ya find your way there you know! :P

Many thanks btw, I edited and replaced the old one with a more complete version. :) Not quite DONE yet, but finding momentum...

I think around then I was all into trying to get the mormon redhead to ease up. You know guys, sometimes we just forget the world and attempt to talk a girl into easing the barrier.

Though I get distracted all too easily. A lack of focus is pretty much my problem. Even for video games. Acute ADD? Not sure.

LOL do you remember how I sketched? two seconds on this one, fifteen seconds on that one, flip the page and start something new, flip back to something else a minute or so later... Everyone says its sort of a "kenetic frenzy of ADD"... do you remember what my sketchbooks looked like? lil here, lil there... yeah... I am the queen of FOCUS (well I am SOMETIMES, but usually its all kinds of scatter-minded)

You know, just get yourself a sketch book and do what I do, flip through it, then go back and flip through it again... before you know it youll have arround 2 dozen great concepts going... you will think alot of them are "TERIBLE IDEAS" but I LOVED terible ideas... you work on one and before you know it, something astonishing happens and you have hit gold! :)

LOL I know, I think part of the fun of it is getting to put the really fun clothes on them that I hardly ever have the occasion to wear! LOL

the green background was a deliberate choice, sort of along the same lines as Disney's Little Mermaid did, to bring the subject out with a contrast of warm and cool colors. I thought that a cool scheme of muted greens would compliment the oranges and reds highlighted in the girls, so far its playing havoc with my peacock tail broom though trying to get it to pop, but I think I have found the way to pull it into the piece as well... its just right now finding the time to actually exicute the idea! :)

The thing I've been having the biggest problem with though is the theigh high boot's color scheme, I want to make it black with red highlights, but I think that may drag the detail out of it, and if I give it the appropriate green light shimmering highlights, it may pull too much green into her... we shall see... again its a time thing, six month old twins and running your own business as well as working full time and keeping everyone in the house in order is kinda demanding and somewhat more important :) but I'll find it eventually
