Description

Because I have up the tutoral of how to do a human profile:

I was asked to do one for a front view, and I had some time this afternoon (this was all of an hour and a half) I decided to do a quick progressional/tutorial.

So during my process of making layers, I decided save each step as a layer and then just seperate them to show how each stage of my process evolves. This works for both traditional media and Digital (and point of fact, this is digital using traditional media simulators, almost exclusively Oil Pastel). Over the course of this however I discovered that it made a very large file, so I decided to break it up into 3 stages. This is stage 1

1. First you draw sort of a upsidedown egg or loose U-V shape to determine the outline of the face.

2. because this is color, lets fill it in with a basic flesh tone

3. This is NOT normaly part of my process, but because my mind does alot of imposing of rules to preserve perportion, I am adding it here to help illustrate the idea. This is the upside down triangle that sort of determines where the features go and preserves their perportion. Notice the "sketch" lines, my process involves alot of short strokes. This allows me the freedom to change my mind on directions or sizes before it gets too far, everything gets "cleaned up" after anyway)

4. BECAUSE this is NOT part of my normal process, but I want the casual observer to see what my mind does to line everything up, I have blended out the triangle just enough so that you can still see how everything basically lines up along it. This will help the newbies get an idea HOW it works to inform placements (just remember I DONT normally do this, normally I just see this in my mind and never actually on the page)

5. Now just below the top of the triangle lets do two slight arches to find the placement of the eyes. Halfway between them and the chin, lets do a very open V shape for the nose placement, and half way between IT and the chin, lets do another one for the center of the upper lip... then lets extend the V of the lip into an M or the shape of a recurved bow to create the opening of the mouth. and finally lets find the lower lips placement with a simple line. These are all just to basically find where things are generally going to go, so quick and loose here!

6. EYES, lets do some circles, make sure the eyes are both pointing in the same direction and just under the curves you drew to place them. ALSO lets do the triangle under the nose to inform where its shadow will fall and give the face some depth

7. Draw the lower lids of the eyes

8. now UPPER eyelids and brows

9. lets now give the eyes SOCKETS (extend the upper lids toward the bridge of the nose, to give the eyes depth. next find the bridge of the nose. And once you've got the general idea in your head where everything is going there, do the a quick U shape on the lower tip of the nose and again for each of the nostrils. We are just going for placement here, if at any point you are unhappy with the way it is working out, just erase or undo it at this stage and not alot of harm is done. You can REALLY see a face starting to happen here.

10. And now we give the lips some shape.

Up to this point, it works for sketching on a pad as well, just omit the colors and think of the general rules and dimentions when using graphite. Anyway that is basically how you build a face from the front view!

Lets procede now to PART 2...
